Prior to joining the faculty in 2007 Professor Dannenmaier was a Bretzfelder Fellow at Columbia Law School and, from 2001 to 2005, Director of Tulane Law School’s Institute for Environmental Law and Policy. He served as a Legal Advisor for the Environment and Director of the Environmental Law Program of the US Agency for International Development from 1996 to 2000, working through the Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) in Washington, DC and the University of Miami’s North-South Center. He was also the Visiting Chair of Natural Resources Law at the University of Calgary in Canada in 2001. Dannenmaier spent the early part of his career as a litigator in the Boston office of McDermott, Will & Emery and in the environmental practice group in the Washington, DC office of Bryan, Cave, LLP. Professor Dannenmaier has authored studies and policy papers on topics including the Implementation of Climate Change Commitments, Water Policy & Decentralization, Environmental Security, International Trade & the Environment, Human Rights & the Environment, and Environmental Democracy. His principal research is focused on citizen access to decision-making processes under both national and international law, with an emphasis on decisions affecting international development and the environment.
