Facility Location & Equipment

Location

The Ruth Lilly Law Library is located within a short distance of several other major research facilities. These include the Indiana University Medical Center Libraries, the Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) University Library, the Indianapolis Marion County Public Library, and the state of Indiana government buildings complex, which includes the Indiana Supreme Court Library and the Indiana State Library. The Indianapolis Marion County Law Library, which supports the consolidated Indianapolis and Marion County governments (known as the Unigov system), is also a short distance from the Law Library.

Study Rooms

Library Study Rooms have been dedicated for group study. Groups of students may reserve the room for two hours each day.

Carrels

Library books are reshelved throughout the day. Our reshelving policy applies to all types of material left in carrels or on tables. Due to the need to make materials available for as many users as possible, "save" signs or "do not reshelve" signs cannot be honored. If you must leave the library for a short period of time (two hours or less) and will be using the books immediately upon your return, you may leave a note on the books stating the present time and the notation "Back in less than 2 hours."

Student Computers

The computer rooms house IBM-compatible computers connected to the University network. Computers are available for use by faculty and students. Software available on the network includes word processing, Internet Browsers, Lexis and Westlaw access (for those with a valid password) and programmed legal exercises produced under the auspices of the Center for Computer-Assisted Legal Instruction (CALI).

Dedicated computer terminals located in the library also provide access to the Lexis and Westlaw legal databases (for anyone with a valid password). The law library's contract restricts access to IU-Indianapolis law students and law faculty. The law library's contract also restricts research on Lexis and Westlaw to matters relating directly to work for a law school class, and may not be used for any other purpose, including without limitation, research conducted for an employer or for personal business. The vendors issue individual student passwords after students have had training in the Legal Writing and Bibliography course.

From time to time, the computer equipment or software may not work properly. Problems should be reported immediately to Terri Cuellar, Technology Coordinator. Please indicate your name, the time the problem occurred and the specific nature of the problem so that the Library can correct it promptly.

Hal Woodard Barristers' Room

To assist Members of the Bar researching and using Law Library materials, the Law Library offers the use of the Woodard Barristers’ Room.   The Woodard Room is reserved exclusively for Members of the Bar and requires those wishing to use the room to register at the Circulation Desk.  When registering, attorneys must present identification demonstrating admission to the bar.  The Woodard Room is not available for client interviews, depositions, or client meetings and is available on a first-come first-serve basis.

All users of the Woodard Room must abide by the general rules and policies of the Law Library.  The Law Library is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

Photocopiers

Library photocopy machines can only be operated with a JagTag or copy-card. You can purchase copy-cards from the JagTag machine located in the library reserve room. Copy-cards cost $1. Additional funds can be added to the copy card at the JagTag station. For IUPUI-affiliated persons with a JagTag, value may be added by inserting bills into the JagTag station machine. To start an account with University Copy Card Services call 274-5177

Microform Reader/Printers

The library has reader/printers for both microfiche and microfilm located in the stacks near the Main Collection on the first floor. Copies from these machines are five cents per page. For assistance or in case of mechanical failure, contact the Circulation Desk.

The coin boxes on the microform reader/printers only take nickels. The library change machine gives limited numbers of nickels in change for $1.00 bills. If you have many copies to make, please bring nickels.

Compact Disc Databases

All patrons are encouraged to use the many compact disc database (CD-ROM's) resources available in the library. The standalone CD-ROM stations are available for general use. Retrieved data can be printed at attached printers or down-loaded to disc.

Supplies

Tape, a paper cutter, staplers, and a three-hole punch are available near the Circulation Desk. The Circulation and reference Desk telephones are not for personal use.

Telephone Use

Public telephones are available at the North and South ends of the corridor area outside the front doors of the library. Patrons may not use library telephones.
