The Center for International and Comparative Law is the nucleus for all of the law school's international law programs, including our LL.M. programs, summer study abroad programs, and other international activities and internships. The Center's mission includes:

  • Enhancing the curriculum and teaching of international and comparative law at the school;
  • Conducting legal and empirical research on key issues in international and comparative law;
  • Promoting law reform and legal infrastructure development in developing countries; and
  • Fostering greater knowledge and understanding of the global dimensions of law through linkages with institutions in countries around the world.

EU flagJean Monnet Module: Comparative EU and U.S. Science, Law and Policy in the Regulation of Pharmaceuticals and Medical Technology. In September 2005, the European Union awarded the law school a grant to develop a Jean Monnet Module of Courses on Comparative EU and U.S. Law, Public Policy and Ethics in the Regulation of Research and Development in the Life Sciences, funded by the European Union. This module is a collaboration between the law school's Center on International and Comparative Law, William S. Hall and Christine S. Hall Center for Law and Health, and the Indiana University Center for Bioethics. The module also draws on the resources of the law school's Center for Intellectual Property Law and Innovation.


The Great Wall of ChinaChinese Law Summer Program. In cooperation with Renmin (People's) University of China School of Law, this program introduces students to the Chinese legal system, including dispute resolution mechanisms, constitutional law, and the country's lawyering system, with emphasis on legal aspects of China's rapidly evolving market economy and development of the rule of law. Enrollment is open to American and foreign students who have completed at least one year of law school in good standing. Students who successfully complete the program may earn 5 - 7 credit hours.

European Parliament European Law Summer Program. The law school also sponsors an annual summer law program in Central and Eastern Europe. The program is conducted in cooperation with Zagreb University in the ancient Croatian resort city of Dubrovnik, where the focus is on EU law, EU enlargement, and the transition in Central and Eastern Europe. Students may earn up to 6 credit hours in each of these programs.



LLM Student LL.M. in American Law for Foreign Lawyers. The Master of Laws (LL.M.) in American Law program offers lawyers from around the world the opportunity to learn about law and legal institutions in the United States. Students are required to complete a total of 24 credit hours of required and elective courses.



Student LL.M. in International and Comparative Law. The Masterof Laws (LL.M.) in International and Comparative Lawprogram will be launched in 2004 with the goal of enrollingapproximately equal numbers of American and foreign students.Students will be required to complete a total of 24 credithours of courses chosen from such areas as public internationallaw, conflict of laws, international business transactions,international trade law, international human rights law, comparativelaw, and European Union law. A thesis is required for 2-4of the 24 credit hours.


Alexandria University, Egypt LL.M. (Master of Laws) International & Comparative Law Track – Egypt. The LL.M. degree awarded by IU School of Law—Indianapolis is now offered to qualified students on-site at Alexandria University and Cairo University Faculties of Law in Egypt. This program is made possible, in part, through a grant from USAID.


International Moot Court Competitions. TheCenter encourages and supports student participation in anumber of prestigious international moot court competitions,including the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot, the European Union Law Moot Court Competition, the International Environmental Moot Court Competition, and the Moot Court Competition on WTO Law.


Distinguished Visitor and Judge-in-Residence Programs.Each year the Center sponsors visits by prominent scholarsand practitioners who present guest lectures and public lecturesin the area of international and comparative law. Additionally,the Judge-in-Residence Program brings prominent jurists fromaround the globe to Indianapolis to speak with students andmeet with members of the local, state, and federal judiciary.



EJLR icon European Journal of Law Reform. Launched in 1998, theEuropean Journal of Law Reform (EJLR) provides aforum for interdisciplinary debate on proposals for law reformand the development of private and public international lawin Europe. The journal is jointly edited by faculty of theIU School of Law - Indianapolis, the Institute of AdvancedLegal Studies (London University), and the University of BaselSchool of Law in Switzerland, with the assistance of a teamof student editors in Indianapolis.


IICLR icon Indiana International & Comparative Law Review. Launchedin 1991, the Indiana International & Comparative LawReview (II&CLR) is devoted to the study and analysisof current international legal issues and problems. The reviewis edited by second and third-year law students chosen bytheir academic standing and performance in a writing competition.
